Have you ever wondered where that cork in your bottle of wine comes from?
The answer is most likely to be Spain or Portugal, where over half of the world’s cork is harvested.

In fact it isthe “National Tree” of Portugal.

However, unlike other forms of forestry, the production of cork never involves the death of a tree.

Instead, they are gently stripped, leaving a strangebut fascinating landscape of denuded trunks.
All of this takes some time. Cork trees can live to over (200)two hundred years but are not considered ready for their cork to be removed until they are at least 25 years old.

Even then, the first two harvests do not produce cork of the highest quality. It isn’t until the trees are in their forties that they produce premium cork.

Once the trees have reached the maturity necessary to produce high quality cork then
they will be harvested only every nine years.

A tree, in its lifetime, can be harvested (the process is known as extraction) about fifteen times.

Little wonder then, that in Portugal and Spain the propagation of the trees and the production of cork has become an inter-generational industry, with farmers still producing a crop from trees planted by their great-great grandfathers.

The cork must, however, be extracted from the trees without causing any lasting harm to them – otherwise, 9 years later they will be useless.

Extraction takes place in the summer when the tree is least susceptible to damage.

The poor cork which is produced as a result of the first two harvests is known as male cork: later extractions provide what is known as gentle cork which is what you will screw out of a wine bottle, the contents of which it helps to flavor.

The extractors must be skilled at their job.
They make two cuts to the tree.
The first is horizontal and is cut around the tree.
This is known as the necklace and the incision is made at a height
around three times the circumference of the tree. http://
Then a series of vertical cuts are made which are called openings or rulers.

This is the point at which the extractors must use the most strength
but at the same time be at their most gentle.
They push the handle of the axe in to the rulers and pry the cork away.

If the cuts are too deep or impatiently done then there is a risk that the phellogen of the tree will be damaged.
This is the cell layer which is responsible for the development and growth of the periderm of the tree – its bark in other words.

Damage this and the tree will produce poor or no cork in the future: it may even die.

So strength and gentleness must be used in equal measure during the extraction.

Once the cork is extracted it is stacked in layers and left to dry out.
Once that has taken place it is taken to be processed.

The technique used leaves the trees alive and the environment intact – cork production is said to one of the most eco-friendly and recyclable harvests on the planet.

The trees prevent the local environment from becoming arid and so actively help to maintain rare ecosystems.

Yet ultimately, the fascination is in its production, which leaves so many trees stripped and bared to the elements and which gives the landscapes of parts of Spain and Portugal such a unique appearance.

1. To remove a bandage painlessly,

saturate the bandage with vodka.

10 Worst Foods In Your Pantry

1. Soda and Sweetened Beverages

Some of the worst foods in their pantry are soda and other sweetened drinks because these contribute refined carbohydrate calories without nutrients. David Leopold, MD, director of integrative medical education for the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, puts any type of soda at the top of his “worst” list. Some might be surprised that sweetened teas and energy drinks rival the sugar in soda with about 50 grams of sugar per 16-ounce bottle.

2. High Sugar, Low Fiber Breakfast Cereals

Cold cereals were among the top sources of added sugar for children between the ages of 2 and 8, according to a recent report. A cereal that lists a refined grain and sugar as the first two ingredients won’t satisfy your hunger through the morning and it won’t contribute important nutrients, which come from whole foods like whole grains, nuts, or dried fruit.

3. Snack Cakes and Cupcakes

Snack cakes have three of the four ingredients we need to eat less of: refined flour, added sugars, and saturated fat. The typical snack cake serving, such as two Hostess Ho Hos, contains 228 calories, 9 grams of saturated fat, and 28 grams of sugar. Keep in mind that 9 grams of saturated fat is half the maximum daily amount of saturated fat recommended for someone eating 1,800 calories a day, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines.

4. Movie Theater or Mega Butter Microwave Popcorn

The “Extra Butter” or “Movie Theater” microwave popcorn choices are some of the last products that still have shocking amounts of trans fat in them with a small serving of 3 tablespoons (unpopped) containing about 2.5 grams of saturated fat and 5 grams of trans fat. Each serving also adds at least 300 milligrams of sodium to your day’s total.

5. Chips and Cheetos

This popular snack group category made the list because they are processed with gobs of fat and sodium and usually include a refined grain. A 2-ounce bag of chips or Cheetos usually adds more than 300 calories, 20 grams of fat, and over 450 milligrams of sodium. The worst part is we tend to eat too much of them because even a 2-ounce portion doesn’t seem to satisfy our stomach.

6. Packaged Muffins and Cereal Bars

You expect Pop Tarts to be full of sugar (about 16 grams of sugar each) but you might be surprised to learn that even the more healthful sounding cereal bars or packaged muffins contain about the same amount of sugar (or more) than your typical toaster pastry. Otis Spunkmeyer brand muffins contribute about 30 grams of sugar per 4-ounce muffin, Weight Watchers muffins add about 20 grams of sugar per 2.2-ounce muffin, and a small Nutri-Grain cereal bar has 13 grams of sugar.

7. Crackers (made with refined flour)

They are so easy to eat a lot of because they are bite-size and crunchy. A few years ago crackers were held together with partially hydrogenated fat (which added trans fat) and now the trans fats are mostly gone, but most crackers are still low in fiber and high in sodium.

8. Yeast Breads (made with refined flour)

Yeast breads, from hot dog buns to Texas toast, made the “worst” list for two reasons: They are one of the biggest sources of refined flour in the typical American diet and they are also the No. 1 source of sodium among the U.S. population.

9. Store-Bought Cookies (especially the chocolate coated ones)

Grain desserts, which includes cookies, are a major source of added sugars, more so than dairy desserts or candy, according to a new report. Some commercial cookies are higher in fat, saturated fat and sugar than others but they all usually start with refined flour. The chocolate coated cookies tend to have the most saturated fat (about 5 grams per 3 cookie serving).

10. Canned Soup and Instant Noodle Cups

Some choices in the soup aisle have half a day’s worth of sodium in a serving. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend half the U.S. population, including people aged 51 and older and those of any age who are African-American or have hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease, reduce their sodium to 1,500 milligrams a day.

While having a drink of coke the other day, it just struck me on the idea of baking a cake with it. On top of adding coke into the cake mixture, I also made some coke glazing to pour over the baked cake for a glossy finish. The taste of coke was not prominent as those who tasted the cake could not guess that coke was one of the ingredients until I told them so. Here’s how the recipes goes:

Ingredients
1 1/2 cup coke
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs – beat/whisk until fluffy
3 tbsp salted butter
2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp vanilla essence

Glazing:
1 1/2 cup coke
1 tbsp brown sugar

Method:
Add sugar and coke into a pan, simmer until you get a thick syrup and reduced to half the portion.
Off the heat, add butter and stir slowly to dissolve it.
Let it cool down, then the shifted the flour, soda and baking powder. Gently fold in.
Add the eggs and do the same.
Line a baking tray with parchment/baking paper, covering all sides/angles
Pour the cake mixture inside and bake at a preheated oven (10mins) – 200c for 40 Min’s or until the cake is done with.
For the glazing, simmer the coke and sugar, again to obtain a thick syrup.
Pour over the cake while its still warm.
Let the cake cool down before cutting in shapes you prefer.

Can Certain Foods Really Save Your Life?
‘Super foods’ can help prevent disease, prolong life, and more

Quinoa, broccoli, beans, and almonds hardly sound like life-savers. But according to scientific research and a few recent books, these and certain other foods are just that. Almost daily, new studies reveal more about the powerful substances found in particular foods, and how they can improve our health and/or prevent disease.

It’s true, experts say — what you put in your mouth really can affect how long you live, whether you get certain diseases, and how your body ages.

“Absolutely, there are foods that when added to the diet can make a significant health difference,” says David Grotto, RD, author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life.

He offers a few examples: “If you have arthritis, eat ginger, peppers, and yogurt; for headaches or migraines, try blueberries, mushrooms, or rosemary; insomnia sufferers, try cherries, Romaine lettuce, and walnuts; and if you are overweight, eggs, oats, and pears can help you slim down.”

Joy Bauer, MS, RD, Today Show registered dietitian and author of Joy Bauer’s Food Cures, agrees. “You can treat common health concerns, look younger, live longer, boost mood, and manage diabetes and more by choosing the right foods,” she says.

It seems that eating a variety of healthy foods — particularly fresh produce and whole grains — gives your body substances that help battle the “free radicals” that can damage cells. These foods may thus help boost immunity, and reduce inflammation at the cellular level. And that’s not all.

“There is not one or even a small number of nutrients — there are thousands of health-promoting, beneficial compounds such as phytonutrients, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, that head off diseases that can shorten your life,” says Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD, author of The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to the New Food Pyramids.

Heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers are just a few of the chronic conditions that a healthy diet can help to prevent.

But, experts add, it’s important to remember that diet alone is not the answer: “A healthy lifestyle includes regular physical activity, not smoking [and] controlling stress, along with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and adequate amounts of low-fat dairy, lean meats, fish, and healthy fats,” Ward says.
14 Foods that Could Help Save Your Life

That said, here are 14 foods that deserve a place in your diet, along with their specific nutritional attributes, according to Joy Bauer’s Food Cures and 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life:

* Almonds: These nutritious nuggets are a good source of protein, fiber, vitamin E, and a variety of antioxidants. They can help with weight control and heart health, and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
* Barley: This whole grain is a rich source of vitamin E, fiber, B vitamins, and a wealth of antioxidants. Barley contains beta-glucan, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
* Quinoa: This is an ancient grain high in protein, fiber, iron, zinc, vitamin E, and selenium. It can help control your weight and help lower your risk for heart disease and diabetes.
* Coffee: In moderate doses, coffee may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, improve mood and memory, and, for men, reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease.
* Eggs: They are low in calories (75 per egg), an excellent source of high-quality protein, and rich in folate, choline, and iron. They can play a role in eye health and weight management — an egg at breakfast helps to curb appetite.
* Grapes: They’re rich in vitamin C, potassium and quercetin. Preliminary studies have shown that quercetin may boost the immune system.

What Makes a Super Food?

Several efforts are afoot to rank or score foods according to their nutritional profiles. But James Joseph, PhD, a researcher for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, says the various systems can be confusing. It’s easier, he says, to simply choose a wide variety of colorful produce, whole grains, nuts, fish, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.

“Most people don’t walk around with a pyramid or book on the healthiest foods but they do know their grocery stores,” says Joseph, author of The Color Code. “Avoid most of the center aisles and spend more time in the perimeter, where produce, dairy, meats, fish and whole grain bread are located.”

Venture into the interior aisles for whole grains, nuts, and simple frozen foods such as blueberries, he advises — but try to avoid refined flour, sugar, saturated and trans fats, and the temptations of the snack aisles.

And don’t forget that portion size matters, even when it comes to healthy foods. You can take more liberties when eating low-calorie fruits and simply prepared vegetables, but take care to eat other super foods in sensible portions.
Think Addition, Not Subtraction

Perhaps the best thing about “super foods,” experts say, is the idea that you can stop worrying so much about the foods you should avoid, and instead concentrate on foods you can add to your diet.

“People are tired of being told what not to eat, and if we could shift our advice to encourage them to start eating more good-for-you foods, they will recognize how delicious and filling healthy foods are and eat fewer of the less-healthy foods,” Grotto says.

Food Poisoning Symptoms
More than 76 million persons in the United States become ill from the food they eat and over 5000 will die every year from food poisoning. Uncooked or undercooked foods (meat, eggs or fish) and improper cleaning and washing of fruits and vegetables are the main causes of food poisoning.

The reason for Food Poisoning symptoms
The underlying cause of food poisoning is the presence of large amounts bacteria in food. The most common are Staphylococcus ( found in salad dressing, ham, eggs, custard-filled pastries, mayonnaise, and potato salad), Salmonella ( found in poultry, beef, eggs, or dairy products) or E. coli (found in undercooked hamburger, unpasteurized apple juice or cider, raw milk, contaminated water (or ice), vegetables fertilized by cow manure)

Symptoms of Food Poisoning
The symptoms of food poisoning vary with the source and severity of contamination and usually manifest within a few hours of consuming contaminated food. The general symptoms can include one of more of the following:

Upset stomach
Nausea
Fever that lasts longer than 24 hours
Vomiting
Abdominal cramps
Diarrhea (Bloody diarrhea or pus in the stool)
Dizziness and/ or fainting,
Rapid heart rate
Weakness
Numbness or tingling in the arms, legs or mouth
Most food poisoning symptoms will resolve themselves on their own in a few days. You should seek medical attention if:

The symptoms of food poisoning last for more than two days of if there is a persistent fever with or without shivers or chills.
There is extremely watery diarrhea
There is blood pus or mucus (whitish-gray in color) mixed in with the stools
There are symptoms of dehydration — excessive thirst, dry mouth, little or no urination, severe weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness
There is anyone else in your family is also sick with similar symptoms.
Treatment
Fluids and electrolytes and lost from vomiting and diarrhea should be replaced by drinking clear liquids or diluted energy drinks such as Gatorade or Powerade. If medical attention is necessary, a doctor may prescribe medication to treat the fever, vomiting or diarrhea.

Tips to Prevent Food Poisoning
1.Use purified or bottled water
2.Practice proper hygiene (thoroughly washing hands) when coming into contact with food
3.Workers in the food industry should use masks, cap and gloves during cooking and serving.
4.Sick individuals should not handle food
5.Kitchen and other food preparation surfaces should be kept clean
6.Utensils should be washed with soap and hot water.
7.Food that has been prepared should not be kept at room temperature for prolonged periods of time.
8.All food materials should be kept in closed containers.
9.Fruits and Vegetables should be properly washed
10.Meat should be fresh and should be purchased from butcher or market
11.Do not consume foods that passed their expiration or “use by” date
